Alicante-Elche Airport Launches Major Expansion Amid Soaring Passenger Numbers
Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport is set to undergo a major expansion as passenger traffic continues to rise. In 2024, the airport recorded 18.4 million travellers, a 16.8% increase from the previous year, underscoring the urgent need for upgraded infrastructure.
To meet this growing demand, Spain’s airport operator Aena has launched a €19.8 million project to expand the main terminal. The works will involve demolishing the old terminal building to make way for an enlarged boarding area. The plans also include new gates dedicated to non-Schengen flights, upgraded security systems, and the addition of more commercial space, including shops and dining areas. The improvements are aimed at enhancing passenger experience by reducing wait times and easing congestion.
While the terminal expansion is a welcome development, regional leaders are calling for further investment. Marián Cano, the Valencian regional minister for Innovation, Industry, Trade and Tourism, has urged the government to prioritise the construction of a second runway and establish a rail link to the airport. These measures, she argued, are essential to sustaining long-term growth and improving regional connectivity. At present, Aena has not committed to a second runway, maintaining its focus on terminal and infrastructure improvements. A timeline for the completion of the renovation project has yet to be announced.
